First Impressions: Queens Blade Episode 1

Published by necroseer at 4:42 pm under Anime, Queens Blade Edit This

Time to wake up and smell the flowers.

My first thoughts were ‘There sure are a lot of breasts and nipples in this…’. And after watching through it, I can say that this series surely thrives on this overexposure of cleavage. Nothing really catches the eyes more than an over abundance of skin and the threadbare makings of a proper plot.

The page has been ripped!

But even then, I can’t say it was that bad. The animation was smooth and well proportioned (though the size of the characters’ chests may be questionable) across the episode, even though it took some dives here and there. What I noticed most clearly was the fact that the animation quality seemed incredibly high when it focused on any sort of female anatomy. The animation staff seem quite enthusiastic if I say so myself.

Torn clothing everywhere!

On the other hand, the story was so thin it was barely existent. So girls come together and battle it out for the title of ‘Queen’ - with this premise alone you know that it’s going to be a sleaze-fest of removable clothing, gratuitous fanservice and insensible groping (much like another anime series). The pink bunny girl didn’t make things any better with her squeezable acid lactating breasts. And then there’s Reina defeating her by clamping her nipples shut, thus creating the concept of ‘death by expanding breasts’. Laughable but not really what you would expect of a proper battle sequence.

The so called Armour of God.

Besides the fighting, there’s some conversation in between and I can’t really say the lines are interesting either. It’s the old thing with the whole ‘becoming stronger’ and ‘running away from home because your fate’s already been decided’ stuff. Nothing too mind blowing but then again I’m rather skeptical about the series showing anything that can be regarded as proper philosophical diatribe for a show that follows the tradition of Ikkitousen.

So in the end, I’m left unimpressed by the first episode. So the animation was much better than first expected. That’s a good thing. But then again, if the show descends down into the repetitiveness of simply fighting anything that the main character comes into contact with (with a dash of ripped clothing for the masses), then for all the production value put into it, the show shall merely remain as something to amuse the male population and nothing more. We’ll have to see how it goes after a few more episodes.
