The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan Episodes 1-3 ~ The Misadventures of Kyon

Kyon wants you!

I can’t really say that this was what I expected, especially after the ‘first’ episode aired. After all, getting treated to a minute plus of ‘Nice Boat’ didn’t really make my day. But what I can say is that Haruhi-chan creates it’s own brand of humour through a mixture of simple animation, randomness and pure absurdity, and Kyon, our unlucky protagonist, is once again the one at the centre of all these adventures. You can check out the screenshots here in the gallery or click on the links below to watch the actual episodes themselves.

No one knows what’s going on anymore.

Episode One ~ It’s New Years Eve and Kyon returns home only to be attacked by his little sister. What’s even worse is that, after he falls asleep, he dreams of the entire cast as either being talking verions of the three objects that are supposed to bring good luck to a person (just see the picture above) if he dreams of them them during the New Years, or as a sheep and dog…to a normal person they would seem fine, but when you Haruhi in the mix, things tend not to go quite so normally.

Kyon’s reaction is priceless.

Episode Two ~ Haruhi is bored. This normally means weird and random activities forced on Kyon. However, this time we get to her Haruhi vent her frustrations on herself and the pain of boredom that she inflicts on herself. Kyon also finds about Nagato and her x-rated game playing…and provides her with headphones to keep it quiet. We’re also shown a short ‘what-if’ scene with Nagato coming into to save Kyon from Asakura in the most unexpected way - by stepping into her path. Amusing if that did happen, but not as cool as the original script.

‘What are you…a moron?’ ‘Um….’

Episode Three ~ It’s quiz time as Mikuru stumbles on a recording of Kyon and Nagato as contestants on Haruhi’s quiz show. Even with this, Haruhi’s antics don’t get any better, especially with her random question about a dog’s name (complete with made up answer) and then her testing of Kyon’s sturdiness, against a truck no less. Meanwhile, Mikuru’s playing with a miniature lion…is that a plushie or….?
