A Certain Magical Grimoire

This is a series that just keeps getting more interesting by the moment. Conflict and conspiracy are strife already as we’re left to wonder exactly what is the meaning behind the reappearance of Leopard and the space colony he controls and why the governing body of the Police are trying their best to cover its existence. The mysterious presence of the green haired girl in the last moments of the previous episode also opens up questions as to who she is and what she was doing aboard with Leopard. For now we head back to Akiha and her ominous reality as a b-grade student and secret mecha pilot (of justice no doubt!). You can check out the screenshots here as per usual.

Why are the bad guys always so stereotyped?

Continuing on from the first episode, we find out that the news concerning Leopard has been covered up - the Police council guys (who all look like a bunch of dorks. ..seriously!) are striking its reappearance from the records and Kannagi and her boss won’t stand down until they found out what exactly is going on (behind their backs of course). On the other hand, Akiha is found a little worse for wear in space and reawakens back home - quite uneventful for her as it is.

Cement slabs are the new fashion.

Well, she does get quite a surprise the next day. She gets busted by the School Council President for sneaking into the capsule - only to be surprised by the green haired girl who attempts to beat him up only to be held back by the presidents’ guard (who seems to be a ninja - you never see a Sunrise production without one of those!). We don’t know the outcome except that she shows up as a transfer students a few minutes later…life sure is weird isn’t it? She introduces herself as Kawai Honoka…with a slab on cement still on her head.

The rest of the episode we find out that Leopard anti-matter cannon is offline and he needs to repair it - for that reason Honoka abducts Akiha back onto the colony to help her search for a Magnetic Chamber to repair it. They suit up (in a machine that resembles an Iron Maiden…rather ominous i must admit) and fly off in their mechas. Of course, life isn’t so simple and Kannagi is there to stop them. Then there’s the scorpion like machine entity at the end of the episode…something that Honoka calls ‘Nerval’. Well, we’ll definitely get to see more of it next episode.

Regardless, this episode does a good job in expanding the story yet it introduces us to more questions. Like…who is Nerval, why is the suit-up machine shaped like a torture device, what does the golden gun have to do with anything (it’s not a James Bond item is it?) and why does Honoka call Leopard the King and Akiha the Queen? Mysterious indeed. The opening also makes a debut with Ali Project at the forefront of their new song ‘Rara Eve Shinseiki‘ - it actually sounds very fitting for the animation, though personally I’m not quite sure whether it’s the whole ‘in space’ feel or not. Besides that, I look forward again to the next episode - and the continuation of Kannagi’s and Akiha’s confrontation. Not to mention the mysterious masked pair of girls in skimpy jump suits. I question the wardrobe choices of those two.
